German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Washington to begin a visit to the United States where she is expected to meet with President Joe Biden and Vice President Camala Harris.
The visit is seen as an opportunity to mend fences between the United States and Germany after a period of tensions between the two countries during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
Issues to be discussed include the gas pipeline project - Nord Stream - which runs from Russia to Germany.
President Biden opposes the $ 11 billion project, saying it will make Germany and Europe more dependent on Russia for energy needs.
During her last visit to the United States, which is likely to be the last time German Chancellor Angela Merkel is also expected to give a speech at Johns Hopkins University.
