Merkel and Macron promise to continue cooperation between France and Germany
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have stated their determination to promote closer cooperation between France and Germany in international affairs.
At a conference in Paris last night, the two leaders discussed issues such as the situation in Afghanistan and European relations with neighboring eastern nations.
The real focus of the talks between the two was the situation in Afghanistan. Prior to the talks, Merkel said they wanted to discuss what NATO's commitment to Afghanistan would mean for future missions in the fight against terrorism. Macron added that they wanted to discuss the effects that the European Union has learned from the situation.
Merkel is expected to retire later this month after 16 years in power when a new parliament is elected. But Macron confirmed that this was still not his last visit.
