Japan has warned in its annual defense report that escalating military tensions in Taiwan, as well as economic and technological tensions between China and the United States, threaten peace and stability in East Asia.
The report, which was approved by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's government today, said the time had come for Japan to take a closer look at the situation, calling China a major threat to Japan's national security.
China's recent move to strengthen its military presence near Taiwan fears Japan as the island is close to the Japanese mainland to the west. Chinese President Xi Jinping this month promised to complete the process he called a reunion of Taiwan and China and condemned the United States for supporting Taiwan militarily.
