Jeff Bezos has offered to pay Nasa $ 2 billion for a month-long trip project

Jeff Bezos has pledged to pay $ 2bn (£ 1.4bn) of Nasa's costs to be considered for a key contract to build a spacecraft that will be used for the Moon.

In April, the Space Agency awarded a $ 2.9bn contract to Elon Musk, rejecting a bid from Bezos company Blue Origin.

The contract is for the construction of a spacecraft landing system that will carry astronauts to the moon from early 2024.

Nasa could only offer the contract to one company, and not two as expected due to financial constraints.

The Nasa agency had received only $ 850m out of the $ 3.3bn it had requested from Parliament to build a landing system on the moon.

In a letter to Nasa superintendent Bill Nelson, released Monday, Mr. Bezos wrote: "Blue Origin will reduce its budget by eliminating all current and next-year government funding to $ 2bn to improve the current plan.

"This offer is not a postponement, but a direct and permanent waiver of such payments."

When they were awarded the contract, Nasa's head of humanitarian research Kathy Lueders acknowledged that Nasa's current budget did not allow for the company's appointment.

Nasa also cited Elon Musk's certified company, SpaceX, as the reason for the contract.

Costs are also thought to have played an important role in decision-making: SpaceX's bid was costly by far.

The decision meant that SpaceX was allowed to send astronauts on Nasa's first voyage to the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

The Alabama Dynetics defense contractor was also vying for the contract.

Bezos had partnered with distant rock stars Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Draper in a bid to join this important step in Nasa's plan to build a human system landing on the moon.

Their design was called Blue Moon Lander and was very similar to the improved module system that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the area in 1969.

In his letter, Bezos emphasized the clear legacy of the Blue Moon company, "We created a 21st-century landing system inspired by Apollo's beautiful architecture - a masterpiece of architecture. One of its key advantages is that it gives priority to security.

The Musk company has pushed for the development of the aerospace system, using a powerful landing technique and the introduction of innovative methane-based engines.

Bezos also used his letter to stress that the Blue Origin company would use natural hydrogen oil, in connection with Nasa's long-term goals of refueling spacecraft from the water ice mined on the Moon.

The water can be divided into hydrogen gas and oxygen to rocket engines.

In a statement on Nasa's appointment from April, SpaceX received a request for acceptance on technical and management grounds.

The Blue Origin company bid was also rated 'accepted' for its technical merits but also its management rating was considered very good, according to NASA.

After losing the position to SpaceX, Blue Origin filed a complaint through the US Government Accountability Office, alleging that Nasa had not done justice in the sense of pushing the process to a deadline to provide space for SpaceX.

The protests, along with those of the Dynetics company, are awaiting sentencing, although some in the community who have been involved in aviation issues say the decision could be reversed.
