At the Tokyo Olympics, South Africa has won its first gold medal in swimming in 25 years.
Tatjana Schoenmaker set a new world record in the women's 200m final. She was the first woman to swim in less than 2 minutes and 19 seconds.
On Tuesday, she won the 100-meter race. Her 100-meter victory was the first by a South African female swimmer in 21 years.
Schoenmaker said she hoped her victory would bring happiness home after days of violence. South Africa witnessed weeks of violent protests and looting that left more than 300 people dead and the loss of billions of dollars worth of property.
