French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with US counterpart Joe Biden over the next few days aimed at calming diplomatic tensions between the two nations over an agreement to sell Australian military submarines.
French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said the telephone conversation followed President Biden's request to speak to Macron, who was outraged by Australia's decision to cancel a French submarine deal. Australia has instead decided to enter into an agreement with the United States and the United Kingdom to provide nuclear submarines.
France has said it feels "betrayed" due to not being informed of the new agreement and has taken drastic diplomatic steps including repatriating its ambassadors to the United States and Australia as a way of expressing outrage.
