Tunisian President Kais Saied has appointed Najla Bouden Romdhane as the new Prime Minister. Romdhane who is a geologist and an engineer at the university has no experience in governmental affairs.
The Tunisian president has appointed the first woman to hold the post of Prime Minister for about two months after giving himself full power as president in what critics call a coup.
Najla Romdhane, Tunisia's first female Prime Minister, has been tasked by President Kais to form a government as soon as possible.
The president's office has released a videotape showing the country's leader meeting with Prime Minister Bouden in his office, giving him the responsibility to come up with a new government within hours or days. Bouden enters office at a time when the country is facing an economic crisis.
The president has said the main role of the next government is to deal with the ongoing corruption and tensions in the Tunisian government.
Tunisians say they do not see any change in their lives
The 63-year-old Bouden will be the 10th Prime Minister appointed since 2011 during a protest rally to oust longtime dictator Zine El Abedine Ben Ali.
The country has made a name for itself internationally through its democratic transition, but many Tunisians say they do not see any change in their lives and are stuck with an inactive government of its corrupt citizens.
In July president Kais Saied overthrew the government of former Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, dissolved parliament, and took power after months of political stalemate following the economic crisis and further deaths caused by the coronavirus.
Last week he gave himself all the power as president and has been facing various calls forcing him to form a government.
