Chinese President Xi Jinping has spoken to US President Joe Biden for the first time in seven months.
A White House statement said the two leaders discussed the two countries' role in ensuring competition does not lead to conflict.
This is the second time the presidents have spoken on the phone since President Biden came to power.
US-China relations have been strained due to trade tensions and the corona crisis.
"The two leaders had in-depth discussions in areas of interest," a White House statement said.
China Broadcasting Corporation CCTV said the telephone talks were aimed at agreeing to have communication strategies and a compromise issue.
"Not only China and the United States can deal with their relations but also for the future of the whole world," Xi said, according to a CCTV statement.
Mr. Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, was speaking to Mr. Xi when he came to power.
