The South African president appears before a panel investigating allegations of corruption against his predecessor Zuma

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa today is expected to appear before a panel investigating allegations of corruption against his predecessor Jacob Zuma.

The panel was set up to investigate allegations that his predecessor Jacob Zuma - during his tenure - allowed the wealthy Gupta family to plunder government resources and influence the government and cabinet appointments.

Both Zuma and Gupta deny any wrongdoing.

The scandal is estimated to cost South Africa $ 81bn (£ 58bn) in public funds and miss out on many opportunities that would benefit the country.

Mr. Ramaphosa was the deputy leader of the ruling ANC at the time.

He has been called in to answer questions about what the party knew, if anything, about allegations of misconduct and whether they did anything to try to prevent such damage.
