France departs from negotiations with the British Defense Council as the dispute escalates

The French defense minister has suspended talks with his British counterpart amid a dispute fueled by a new security agreement between Britain, the United States, and Australia.

Paris is angry after Australia signed the Aukus agreement to build nuclear submarines, scrapping a major deal with France in the process.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said France had no concerns about the deal.

But a meeting between Florence Parly and British Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace in London this week has been canceled.

Lord Ricketts, the former British ambassador to France who was due to be the co-chair of the two-day talks, confirmed the meeting had been "postponed to another date".

The Aukus agreement reached last week, seen as an effort to counter China's influence in the competitive South China Sea, ended a $ 37bn (£ 27bn) agreement signed by Australia in 2016 for France to build 12 regular submarines.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has described it as a "knife in the back" which he described as "unacceptable behavior between friends and allies".
