Russia elections: Putin's party leads in the wake of allegations of vote-rigging

President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party appears to have won a landslide victory in parliament, amid allegations of vote-rigging.

Preliminary votes provide a major prediction of victory for the ruling party.

Many Kremlin critics were barred from participating in the election, and there have been several reports of ballots stolen and others forced to vote.

The Electoral Commission denied the allegations. The vote elected 450 MPs for the Duma parliament in Moscow. A total of 14 parties were part of the vote.

In a preliminary report, the commission said that 50% of the votes counted, United Russia received more than 46%, followed by the Communist Party with 21%.

United Russia claimed victory a few hours after polling stations closed on Sunday evening. National television showed United Russia's top official, Andrei Turchak, congratulating his supporters in Moscow for what he described as a just and true victory.

Preliminary results show that despite Putin's party may have more seats in parliament, it has lost about one-fifth of its supporters.

In 2016, the party won 54% of the vote. The Communists Party saw its supporters increase by 8%.

Concerns about living conditions and allegations of corruption and the imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny have affected Mr. Putin's party support.
