The European Union (EU) has announced today that it will donate another 200 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to poor nations, a step that doubles its commitment to a vaccine aimed at curbing efforts to curb the global health epidemic.
The new commitment was announced by EU Council President Ursula von der Leyen during her annual speech on policy and action within the European Union. Ms. Von der Leyen said the additional 200 million doses would be released in the middle of next year and called the contribution a major investment in health and global solidarity.
The European Union's assistance comes at a time when poor nations are still embroiled in a vaccination campaign plagued by vaccine scarcity as well as resistance to counterfeit vaccines.
