North Korea today fired two missiles aimed at the sea two days after the government in Pyongyang claimed it had tested new long-range missiles. A statement issued by South Korea's neighboring national army said the two missiles were fired from central North Korea and aimed at the eastern sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
South Korea has said it is cooperating with US intelligence authorities to gather detailed information about the weapons tests and that its military is on high alert. Today's experiments, which North Korea has described as "strategic", are the first to be conducted in six months and are likely to spark new tensions on the Korean peninsula.
Under UN Security Council resolutions, North Korea is barred from developing or conducting long-range missile tests but several times the nation has ignored the ban.
