Former Malawian MP commits suicide in parliament

Former Malawian MP Clement Chiwaya has committed suicide by shooting himself outside parliament.

Mr. Chiwaya, who has been using a wheelchair since he contracted polio at the age of two, was deputy speaker between 2014 and 2019.

In a message he left before he went to parliament in Lilongwe, he wrote about a dispute he had with parliament over car ownership.

After losing the election, he began the process of wanting to buy a car that had been given to him by parliament which enabled him to drive despite his disability.

He paid for the car but accused parliament of failing to give him the right to own it.

Local media reported that he entered the parliamentary inquiry office on Thursday and shot himself.

In a message he left, he said he was tired of praying for what was his and had decided to kill himself for fear of hurting others.

Mr. Chiwaya, born in 1971, became a disability rights activist and succeeded three times as an MP.

Police are now investigating how he managed to enter parliament, an area that is heavily guarded.
