The WTO agrees with the United States on a solar tariff dispute with China

The World Trade Organization (WTO) yesterday gave victory to the United States in resolving a dispute between it and China over solar energy tariffs, which Washington imposed as part of a trade war between the two nations.

Former US President Donald Trump approved high tariffs on solar panels in January 2018, to protect U.S. manufacturers, sparking complaints from China and South Korea, and opposition from the US solar industry.

Beijing asked the WTO to form a dispute resolution committee to determine whether the US tax violated international trade law, and in its decision, the committee said it rejected China's claims. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, nominated by Trump's successor, Joe Biden, has praised the decision.

Trump's move to impose tariffs was one of the first steps in the US-China trade war, which was calmed by an agreement signed in early 2020 between the two world's leading economies.
