Eleven people killed by lightning while taking selfies in India

Lightning struck and killed 11 people and injured others in Jaipur in northern India on Sunday.

The men were taking a selfie in the rain on top of a building that is popular in a tourist attraction.

Twenty-seven people were in the building when the walls of the castle collapsed - and some were reported to have jumped to the ground.

Lightning strikes an average of 2,000 people in India every year.

A senior police officer told the media that most of the people killed in the building were youths.

On Sunday alone, they have witnessed more than nine deaths reported in Rajasthan province where Jaipur is located, according to local media.

The state leader, Ashok Gehlot, announced a non-payment of 6700 dollars equivalent to 500,000 rupees as compensation for families who have lost loved ones.

The rainy season in India lasts from June to September.

India's meteorological agency (IMD) has said lightning deaths have doubled in the country since the 1960s - a factor cited by climate change.

Statistics show that the incidence of lightning increases by 30% -40% from the beginning and middle of -1990.
