Hurricane Ida has killed at least 44 people in the United States

At least 44 people have died in floods in the United States after the remains of Hurricane Ida caused heavy rains in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. In New York City, at least 12 people have been killed, including three in Westchester County, and the governor of New Jersey said in a Twitter message that at least 23 people from the state had perished in the storm.

Officials in New York have blamed the floods for torrential downpours. The number of disasters such as floods and heatwaves caused by climate change has increased fivefold in the last 50 years, according to a report released this week by the United Nations Meteorological Agency.

US President Joe Biden said yesterday that the central government is ready for all needed assistance.
