African business owners who rely on social media to run their sales estimate the losses they have suffered after the social networking services Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram disappeared for six hours.
Experts say online business services, which have experienced significant growth in Africa during the corona epidemic, were severely affected.
"The most affected are those who are self-employed and small businesses, compared to those with big businesses that have websites," Digital Marketing Specialist Karen Wambugu told the BBC.
He added: "While major social networks such as Facebook and Instagram do not work, small businesses cannot run their sales because they have no alternative."
A Ghanaian businesswoman who runs her online food business and also sells her groceries at a hotel in the capital Accra says the services were cut off during a busy lunch.
"Eighty percent of our sales come from customers who order food online. Few customers can get to a hotel when there is a traffic jam to come and eat," Kafui Adza told the BBC.
