The first cure for sickle cell disease in 20 years will help prevent thousands of people from going to the hospital for the next three years, the UK's Ministry of Health has said.
Infectious cell disease is untreated and affects millions of people worldwide.
In the UK the National Institutes of Health has said the treatment will help reduce the inequality of health care for black people, who are the most affected and often the poorest.
The drug has been called "invention therapy".

The drug, crizanlizumab, which is made by Novartis, is injected into a vein and can be used in combination with conventional medicine and blood transfusions.
27-year-old Sarah-Jane has been suffering from sickle cell disease, which made her despair of becoming a kindergarten teacher because this job would put her at risk of infection.
"Now, I've got a definite reason and I'd like to spread awareness about sickle cell accommodation," he says.
